Code 128 accepts any printable ASCII characters.

Low contrast between bars and background may reduce scan reliability. Prefer near-black bars on a light background for physical labels.

±90° produces a vertical barcode (shelf strips).

Which format?

Internal inventory / shipping labels: Code 128 (most versatile) or Code 39 (legacy scanners). ITF for pure numeric carton codes.

Retail product identifiers: EAN-13, EAN-8 or UPC-A. These encode a GS1-issued number — generating the barcode does not allocate or register that number.

A barcode only encodes the identifier you supply. Product title, price or origin require a separate database or lookup service.

How to generate a barcode

1

Choose symbology

Code 128 for general use; EAN-13 / UPC for retail product codes.

2

Enter valid data

Follow the hint under the field. For retail formats the check digit is computed when you omit it.

3

Download

SVG for vector workflows; PNG for documents and many label printers.

Barcode FAQ

Which format do I need for a product I sell?

Retail products require a GS1-issued EAN-13 or UPC-A number. Obtain the number from a GS1 member organisation, then encode it here. Generating a barcode image does not allocate or register an official identifier.

Why does it say “invalid check digit”?

Retail formats end with a calculated check digit. Either enter 12 digits (EAN-13), 7 (EAN-8) or 11 (UPC-A) and we will append the correct check digit, or supply the full length with a valid check digit. An incorrect supplied check digit is never silently replaced.

What do the first digits of an EAN-13 mean?

The leading digits identify the GS1 prefix (often associated with a country or region of the issuing organisation). They are not proof of the product’s manufacturing country. Examples for orientation only: 450–459 / 490–499 (Japan), 500–509 (UK), 690–699 (China), 890 (India), 0–1 (USA/Canada).

How large will the printed barcode be?

SVG is resolution-independent. PNG size is in pixels; physical size depends on print DPI. At 300 DPI, a 2000 px wide image is about 6.7 inches (170 mm) wide. Ensure quiet zones (clear margins) remain around the bars. Prefer dark bars on a light background for reliable scanning.

Is the output print-quality?

SVG is pure vector and scales cleanly. PNG exports use the size you choose. Scanner success also depends on contrast, quiet zones, substrate and the scanner itself — this tool does not certify scan performance.
